It was also a personal quest to improve her speaking skills and boost her confidence in the language.
“I use English for work, but I am not a native speaker,” Catherine shares. “I wanted to improve my speaking skills and confidence.” Fast forward three years, and English Corner boasts an impressive membership of 272 people.
A Platform for English Practice
The core of English Corner is its weekly meetings structured Toastmasters format. Each meeting typically lasts for one hour and includes a prepared speech, constructive feedback, and a focus on improving English language skills.
The group comprises an impressive 75-80% women and 25-30% men from China, both in the country and abroad. A substantial 270 people actively participate in the meetings. Among them is one native English speaker who joins the club as Catherine’s mentor, Rachelle, offering valuable support in running the meetings.
The Power of Feedback
One of the essential elements of English Corner is the provision of constructive feedback. Catherine emphasizes that while English may not be the first language for many participants, the platform has enabled them to build confidence in speaking and giving feedback.
Catherine initially shouldered the responsibility of offering feedback, but with her mentor’s guidance, more participants started participating in the process. Now, each speaker has 2-3 evaluators, and everyone, regardless of their fluency, is encouraged to share their thoughts. Even simple comments such as, “I liked this speech” make a significant impact on the speaker and the evaluator.
Impact on Lives
English Corner’s influence goes beyond language skills. Catherine Li has observed that her initiative has deeply impacted the lives of its members. “People want me to travel to their places, stay with them, and be a part of their lives,” she says. “People say, ‘Catherine, you don’t know how much difference this has made in my life.'”
Last May, during a visit to Beijing, some members even organized a gathering to welcome her, highlighting the sense of community and friendship that has developed through English Corner.
Toastmasters and Personal Growth
Catherine’s own journey with Toastmasters began in 2014 when she joined a corporate club in Vancouver. As she recalls, her English proficiency was limited, and her reserved nature made social interaction challenging. It was an encounter with a speech about “jumping out of ones comfort zone” that inspired her to take on the challenge.
Through Toastmasters, Catherine not only improved her public speaking skills but also gained the confidence to take on leadership roles at her workplace. “I have gotten promotions, cleared interviews, gotten new jobs,” she reflects. “Toastmasters has helped me improve skills that have helped me earn better.”

Catherine encourages English Corner members to explore Toastmasters clubs in their vicinity, underlining the multiple resources and international reach of the organization. She notes that it’s her first recommendation to friends seeking to enhance their public speaking and leadership skills.
